At this year’s anniversary celebrations, we were proud to recognise a very special milestone within our team — three of our staff members receiving permanent contracts after more than three years of dedication to the Bakhita School of Excellence.
Mana Hetty, Mana Lena, and Teacher Bela have each been part of the journey from the very beginning — when the school was still finding its feet — and have helped shape it into what it is today. Their commitment, adaptability, and belief in the vision have played a significant role in the growth of Bakhita.
Mana Hetty began her journey as our cook and quickly became much more than that. Known affectionately as “Mama Hetty,” she brings warmth, care, and joy to the school every day — ensuring our students are nourished and looked after. From sharing her skills in Indonesian cooking to helping inspire the opening of a small café, she continues to contribute far beyond her role.
Mana Lena’s journey reflects incredible growth and determination. Starting as a cleaner, she is now our Senior Administrator and a central figure in the day-to-day running of the school. From learning basic computer skills to confidently managing systems like Excel and Xero, she has taken on increasing responsibility and become a trusted leader within the team.
Teacher Bela made the bold decision to leave her home in Baucau and join the school in Same. Over the years, she has grown into a Year Level Coordinator, consistently challenging, improving, and strengthening the teaching team. Her commitment to both her students and colleagues has been instrumental in building the academic strength of the school.
All three were also part of a pivotal moment in the school’s journey — stepping up to run the school for the first six months while Ornella was in Australia after the school opened, before she relocated to Timor-Leste full-time. Their leadership during that time demonstrated not only their capability, but their deep sense of ownership and care for the school.
This recognition is more than a contract. It represents trust, stability, and a shared future — and reflects the values that underpin Bakhita: Empowerment, Innovation, Accountability, Passion for People, and Sustainability.
We are incredibly proud of Mana Hetty, Mana Lena, and Teacher Bela, and grateful for everything they have given to this community.
And as always at Bakhita — we look forward to the day when many more of our team stand here too.
