ABOUT US
We believe education
changes everything...
The Bakhita School of Excellence was founded in 2023 by BETTER (Building East Timor Through Education/Resources) with a vision to provide an international standard of education that is accessible to every child in Timor-Leste, regardless of their location or economic background.
At Bakhita, we believe every child has great potential. We want our students to learn not only reading and writing, but also confidence, kindness, and strong values for life. Our teachers work with care and dedication so that every child can grow, dream, and achieve.
Yet today, 70% of students in Timor-Leste fail to meet basic Year 1 learning outcomes, and 58% of adults have either left school early or never attended. With half the population under 19 years old, the need for quality education has never been greater.
That is why Bakhita exists — to give children the chance to receive a strong education and a better future. When children learn well, families grow stronger, and communities have hope.
The Vision
To be a leader in education, characterised by its Catholic values, creating a global vision that inspires hope.
The Mission
Provide an international standard of education from Foundation to Year 12 that is accessible to all those in Timor and enables economic, social and political development of the nation. Fostered in its school values and Catholic values, students don’t just learn for themselves but for their community and country, creating courageous leaders of tomorrow.

2023-2030 The Strategic Vision
By the year 2030, children across Timor-Leste will have access to a BETTER education, creating a global vision of hope. This education, characterised by its Catholic values, will give Timor-Leste a hand up through revolutionary education, not a handout. The mission will be enhanced by the pursuit of educational excellence, creating internationally minded leaders who will go on to serve and transform their country.
OUR CURRICULUM
At the Bakhita School of Excellence, we use the Timorese national curriculum and enrich it with key elements from the Australian curriculum. This helps your child learn in three languages — English, Tetun, and Portuguese — and gain the skills needed for success in school and in life.
